The Story Behind the Design

Moths and candles have a long and uneasy history together. A folklore collection published in 1903 records the belief that if a moth flew into a candle and put out the flame, a death in the house would follow. The death's-head hawkmoth carries the Latin name Acherontia atropos, after Atropos, the Fate who cuts the thread of life. Putting moths on a candle box is either a very old joke or a very old warning, and it is the reason this artwork lands differently from the usual crescent moons.
