Product Overview

Half a kilo of whole dried cornflower heads, grown in Albania. Whole rather than petals, so each flower keeps its ring of ray florets around a darker centre, and the blue is startling for a dried flower: this is the species that holds its colour longer than almost anything else you could dry.

The Story Behind It

Cornflowers were found in Tutankhamun's tomb, still holding most of their colour after three thousand years. Their blue comes from protocyanin, which is the same pigment that reads red in a rose. Once a common weed of European cornfields, so troublesome to harvesters that one old English name for it was hurt-sickle, the plant has collapsed in the wild: in Britain it fell from 264 recorded sites to three within fifty years, pushed out by herbicides and better seed cleaning. The flowers here are grown deliberately rather than gathered.

Why You'll Love It

• Whole heads rather than loose petals, so each flower keeps its full shape
• A blue that survives drying better than almost any other flower
• Half a kilo, which is a great many flowers at this size
• Grown in Albania and dried whole
• Works as confetti, in soap and bath blends, or loose in a bowl

Perfect For

Wedding confetti and table scattering · soap and bath salt makers · anyone who wants blue without dye · craft and resin work · a bowl of loose flowers on a shelf

Auro & Co Moment

Keep them out of direct sun. Cornflower blue is unusually stable but not immune, and a jar on a south-facing sill will fade in a season where the same jar on a shaded shelf holds for years.

Complete the Experience

Pairs with the other dried flowers here, glass storage jars and the wider candle and soap-making range.

FAQ

Are these whole flowers or petals?
Whole heads, so each keeps its ring of florets around the centre.
Will the colour fade?
Cornflower holds its blue better than most dried flowers. Kept out of direct sunlight it lasts a very long time.
Which country are they from?
Albania.
How many flowers is half a kilo?
A great many. Dried cornflower heads are extremely light, so 0.5 kg fills considerably more volume than the weight suggests.
