The Story Behind It

Tarot did not begin as divination. The earliest decks turn up in northern Italy in the early 15th century as equipment for a card game called tarocchi, played by the noble courts; the oldest surviving deck, the Visconti-Sforza, was commissioned in Milan around the 1440s. For roughly three hundred years the cards were simply a game. The shift came in 1781, when the French writer Antoine Court de Gébelin published a claim that the deck encoded ancient Egyptian wisdom. He had no evidence and the theory is long discredited, but it caught, and within a decade the first decks made specifically for reading had appeared.
