Aquarius's water-bearer is the theme of this little wooden box, finished with enamelled detail on a wooden body. At 10 x 10 x 6cm it holds rings, earrings, a few tumbled stones or the odd ticket stub, and it takes up little more room on a dressing table than a coaster. Each box is handmade in India, so the enamel work varies slightly from piece to piece.
The lid shows flowing lines of water in gold line on an ivory enamel disc, ringed by small constellation drawings and set into a navy enamel ground flecked with gold. The lid is hinged and closes with a small metal clasp at the front.
The Story Behind the Design
The Water-Bearer pours from a jar. Greek writers linked the figure to Ganymede, cup-bearer to the gods, while older Babylonian star lists connected the same stars with water and the god Ea. Aquarius runs from roughly 20 January to 18 February (the exact changeover shifts by a day in some years). It is a fixed air sign, symbolised by the Water-Bearer and traditionally ruled by Saturn, and in modern astrology Uranus.
