Product Overview
A small keepsake box for Aries, the first sign of the zodiac, finished with Aries-themed enamelled decoration on a wooden body. At 10 x 10 x 6cm it holds rings, earrings, a few tumbled stones or the odd ticket stub, and it takes up little more room on a dressing table than a coaster. Each box is handmade in India, so the enamel work varies slightly from piece to piece.
The lid shows a ram's head in gold line on an ivory enamel disc, ringed by small constellation drawings and set into a navy enamel ground flecked with gold. The lid is hinged and closes with a small metal clasp at the front.

Aries opens the zodiac year at the spring equinox. Greek writers tied its ram to the golden-fleeced ram that carried Phrixus to safety, whose fleece later sent Jason and the Argonauts to sea. Aries runs from roughly 21 March to 19 April (the exact changeover shifts by a day in some years). It is a cardinal fire sign, symbolised by the Ram and traditionally ruled by Mars.
