Product Overview
A keepsake box for the crab, the sign ruled by the Moon, finished with enamelled decoration on a wooden body. At 10 x 10 x 6cm it holds rings, earrings, a few tumbled stones or the odd ticket stub, and it takes up little more room on a dressing table than a coaster. Each box is handmade in India, so the enamel work varies slightly from piece to piece.
The lid shows a crab in gold line on an ivory enamel disc, ringed by small constellation drawings and set into a navy enamel ground flecked with gold. The lid is hinged and closes with a small metal clasp at the front.
The Story Behind the Design
In Greek myth Hera sent a crab to trouble Heracles while he fought the Hydra, then placed it among the stars. At its centre sits the Beehive Cluster, visible as a faint smudge on a dark night. Cancer runs from roughly 21 June to 22 July (the exact changeover shifts by a day in some years). It is a cardinal water sign, symbolised by the Crab and traditionally ruled by the Moon.
