Product Overview
The middle of three brass skulls, about 6 x 4cm. Its crown is pierced with swirling openwork and a raised flower motif, and the polished brass face stands out against the aged finish. It looks well among old books, a candle and a few dried stems, in the manner of a still-life painting.
The Story Behind It
The phrase memento mori, "remember you must die", gave its name to a whole genre of European still-life painting. Dutch artists of the 1600s grouped skulls with hourglasses, books and snuffed candles, objects that encouraged the viewer to treasure the present.
