Product Overview
Pisces, the sign of the two fish, gives this small wooden box its theme in enamelled decoration. At 10 x 10 x 6cm it holds rings, earrings, a few tumbled stones or the odd ticket stub, and it takes up little more room on a dressing table than a coaster. Each box is handmade in India, so the enamel work varies slightly from piece to piece.
The lid shows two fish circling each other in gold line on an ivory enamel disc, ringed by small constellation drawings and set into a navy enamel ground flecked with gold. The lid is hinged and closes with a small metal clasp at the front.
The Story Behind the Design
Pisces shows two fish tied together by a cord. One Greek telling says Aphrodite and her son Eros became fish and bound themselves together to escape the monster Typhon. Pisces runs from roughly 19 February to 20 March (the exact changeover shifts by a day in some years). It is a mutable water sign, symbolised by the Fish and traditionally ruled by Jupiter, and in modern astrology Neptune.
